Our Story

Inherent Design began with a simple but enduring idea: to create spaces that feel good to live within. Environments that hold memory, support daily life, and create a genuine sense of connection to the people who inhabit them.

From the beginning, the intention was never to follow trends or create interiors driven by fashion alone. Instead, the focus has always been on designing spaces that feel timeless, intuitive, and deeply considered, environments shaped around the way people live emotionally as well as practically.

As the studio has evolved, this philosophy has continued to expand through multiple overlapping disciplines including interior design, residential architecture, bespoke product design, and making. Together, these layers have shaped a practice grounded in both conceptual thinking and material understanding.

Founder Michelle McIlroy studied interior design in Christchurch before moving to London, where she worked at The Conran Shop and later at Aram, two internationally respected design institutions known for their influence on contemporary furniture, interiors, and modern design culture.

Working within these environments provided exposure to some of the most progressive ideas surrounding furniture, lighting, object design, craftsmanship, and spatial experience. It also created opportunities to work alongside designers, artists, architects, and bespoke makers, contributing to projects ranging from individual pieces through to broader spatial concepts.

This early foundation in product design and making continues to inform the studio’s approach today. An understanding of proportion, materiality, detail, and the tactile experience of objects naturally evolved into a broader interest in how people experience space as a whole.

Michelle later went on to complete tertiary-level studies in residential architecture, further deepening the studio’s understanding of structure, spatial planning, and the relationship between interiors and the architectural environment. This multidisciplinary approach allows projects to be considered holistically, balancing atmosphere, functionality, materiality, and the emotional experience of daily life.

Ideas surrounding light, colour, wellbeing, and human behaviour continue to quietly shape the work. Not as trends or formulas, but as deeper considerations that influence how a space feels, functions, and supports the people within it over time.

Today, Inherent Design works across interior architecture, residential design, and bespoke spatial elements, creating homes and environments that feel calm, cohesive, enduring, and deeply connected to the people who experience them.

As a continually evolving practice, the story is still unfolding..
