About the studio
Inherent Design is an Auckland-based interior architecture and residential design studio.
Our work is centred around people, creating spaces that feel considered, supportive, and deeply connected to the way we live.
We adopt a hybrid approach to design that brings together interior architecture, residential design, and bespoke product manufacturing. This cross-disciplinary perspective allows us to shape environments as integrated wholes, where spatial planning, materiality, light, and functionality are considered together from the outset.
Often referred to as interior architecture, this approach looks beyond surface aesthetics to consider how a space is experienced over time. It is grounded not only in how a home looks, but in how it functions, supports daily life, and ultimately feels to live within.
As homes become increasingly complex and significant investments, thoughtful design plays an important role in creating clarity early in the process. Careful planning and considered decision-making help reduce uncertainty during construction, allowing spaces to resolve more cohesively over time.
Whether collaborating alongside architects or working directly with clients, our role is to guide projects with depth, care, and a holistic understanding of the built environment.

Ideas surrounding wellbeing, environmental psychology, and biophilic design quietly inform the work, not as formulas or trends, but as subtle layers that influence how a space feels to inhabit.

For many clients, the design process is deeply personal. It involves trust, decision-making, and navigating the many moving parts that shape a home over time.
Our role extends beyond aesthetics alone. We help bring clarity to complex decisions, guide projects through uncertainty, and create alignment between the vision for a space and the practical realities of bringing it to life.

Our process
Every project begins with understanding how you live, your routines, priorities, aspirations, and the way you want your home to feel.
From there, the design is developed as an integrated whole, balancing spatial planning, detailing, materiality, lighting, and functionality from the earliest stages of the process. Rather than approaching design as a series of isolated decisions, each layer is considered in relationship to the next, allowing the project to evolve cohesively over time.
This integrated approach creates greater clarity early on, helping clients make informed decisions with confidence while reducing reactive changes during construction.
As the project progresses, clients are guided through each stage with care, from concept development and spatial planning through to documentation, material selections, and implementation.
The result is a home that feels resolved beyond aesthetics alone, thoughtful in function, grounded in experience, and deeply connected to the way people live both practically and emotionally.
